2. Give your camera body more credit.

While some people will claim that particular effects in your images are dependent on the lenses you use (usually the very expensive ones), it’s unaffordable and a bad addiction to acquire a new lens every other month. You can do so many things with a kit lens. While I’m sure you know how to use your camera settings beyond “AUTO” and “P” mode, there are functions on the camera body that can produce different effects without using the lens as your crutch. Try shooting overexposed or slow shutter. Here are some things I came up with when I did a mini-project of only overexposed photos. These were created with a kit lens at 1/20 and a tungsten light bulb behind my back:

Again, these ideas aren’t new. But I don’t think new photographers have fully discovered all that their camera can do. Acquiring new lenses is not the always answer, and you can always learn and add to your knowledge about how images are created. Re-visit, re-learn, and reinforce.

P mode does not mean ‘professional’ mode.

Stay tuned next week for Part 3!
